 TRACK IMPROVEMENT ANNOUNCEMENT:

Update: 23Jan08, 04Jan08, 03Feb08, 11Feb08, 19Feb08 21Feb08,

15Mar09, 16Mar08, 23Mar08, 31Mar08, 02Apr08, 06Apr08, 14Apr08

Lubbock Dragway will remain a 1/4 mile Drag Racing Facility.

We promised the volunteers that helped install the required guard rail last year that we would continue to operate as a 1/4 mile track. So, this is our commitment to  all their hard work which affects many fans, racers and sponsors here in West Texas & Eastern New Mexico.

As your reading this announcement, the asphalt from the starting line to 200' past the finish line is now dirt. God willing and the creeks don't rise, we will have a full 50' wide concrete 1/4 mile drag strip. We will need some volunteers again to help reinstall the guard rails along the new surface after the concrete project is complete.

Additionally, we have ordered an NHRA Track Groomer Machine (similar to those used at national events) for preparing the racing surface. The machine will assist in treating the new surface with a rubber base layer. We were advised it will take 2 days of dragging used tires to get the track surface ready.

There are some other projects we want to get done but won't be able to because of our 2008 budget. Your assistance in locating additional sponsors in signage will help in other projects like seal coating the shut down area, staging lanes,  pits area and return road. You assistance will go a long way to help all racers for the future.

We are trying to get more local and state recognition, this too will help for more improvements. Speak out so we can be heard. We would also like to thank ABC Bank for having the faith in me and in the racers

Thanks for all you do and participation..
Dennis Barnard - Owner going on 26 years.

GUARDRAIL PROJECT COMPLETE
This week will be general cleanup, lay down rubber like those machines use at the major NHRA events, confirm timing equipment placement and settings, stripping and whatever else needs to be resolved before opening Test-N-Tune on Saturday April 19, 2008.

NOW LET'S GO RACING !!!

LEFT LANE GUARDRAIL 95%

We have placed all the guardrail on the left lane side and only need to level and tighten bolts. New asphalt has been laid behind to starting line due to erosion and equipment usage. We have found and contracted with a company to install the right lane side of guardrail. Additionally, we have purchased a machine that will lay down rubber like those used at the major NHRA events. We will be finalizing the guardrail project this coming weekend with general cleanup, confirming timing equipment placement, stripping and whatever else need to be resolved before opening day 2008.

GUARDRAIL PROJECT

We have since gotten the dirt from the right lane off the guard rail. We will have to wait until Tuesday to get the left lane done. If we can get help moving the right guard rail to the concrete the weekend of 3/29 at 9am.  We will need 2 tractors & 1 post hole digger to make new holes.

GUARDRAIL PROJECT UNDERWAY

Well this weekend concluded with only 1/8 mile of one side of guardrail being installed. We welcomed the hard work of 13 volunteers that want the season to begin soon. However, it may take a little longer and delay the opening day again.

If your available to volunteer your time and effort, we could use you help this weekend Saturday, April 5, at 9:00 am.

Saturday, April 5 will be another volunteer weekend and if you would like to contribute to the cause "cause you want to race" then be there at 9:00 am or whenever you can til dark. If you can only help for a few hours then we would greatly appreciate it.

MORE BIG POUR

As of 3:00 pm Saturday after 12 hours of pouring, they are finishing up the spectator side by cutting stress relief's every 12 ft. The contractor said that the surface is flat & level. He is very happy with the progress of the work. I told him we can tell when it rains for sure about the levelness. The left lane pour they hope with weather permitting is to take place Tuesday or Wednesday he hopes.

THE BIG POUR

The contractor made special arrangements with the concrete company to begin pouring concrete at 3:00 Saturday morning. One of the benefits of starting at 3:00 am is using the lights from the dragstrip. Here are some photos at 8:00 am. LOOKING GREAT...

As of 19 Feb 08,
These are the latest pictures on the track surface. After days of turning and drying of the base, it is time for the contractor to start cutting the grade for the concrete work to be laid.

After talking to the contractor, everything is looking great. Depending on what happens this Wednesday night and the rest of the week will determine when the concrete forms will take place.

The thing I’ve said to all involved from the beginning is that it has to be done right the 1st time no matter how long it takes in the very expensive job. We want the best and safest race track for the cost.

We know that everybody has their own ideas on how or when we should have done project but do to the deterioration, we feel that God wanted us to do the project now. We didn't know what was happening under the track until we exposed it. We feel really good as to what is going on now to make things better for the future.

Thanks very much to all of you that have contacted us and have supported our efforts with kind thoughts!!!

I will keep you updated on our progress.

Here is the latest on the track repairs.

The contractor started work again after we replaced the old leaky metal water line. During the grading and packing with heavy equipment, the contractor found some soft places on the tracks foundation. Well the out come isn’t good. The subsurface soil was wet about two foot down and isn’t favorable for the foundation in three locations.

You might ask, what is the big deal and why is subsurface soil wet since we haven’t had rain in a long time? The fact is the current foundation and subsurface hasn’t seen sunlight in 35 years and the soil has soaked up the rain through the cracks over the years.

So racers, it will take awhile longer and we want the job done RIGHT so all are happy with the results.

The contractor will begin turning the soil so the subsurface can dry and depending on the weather, they will be grading and packing the foundation again followed with setting the concrete forms.

We will also try to get a head start with tech inspection since we will be down for longer than thought. Now would be a good time to prepare your vehicles for tech inspection and meet NHRA and track guidelines. We will announce a time and location for early inspection.

Thanks Dennis

New pictures are of the replacement of water pipe that ran across the track. Seems old metal water pipe from the well had been unknowing leaking for some time. We dug the trench deeper and replaced the water line with PVC pipe.

In fact, finding this problem has delayed operations a week as to turn the soil and let it dry out. We additionally found down the track, pockets where rain or snow had melted and saturated the ground 2 ft. below. After turning the soil, these windy days will assist the drying and things are looking good again.

Work will resume on Monday, Feb 4th with leveling the grade that is needed for the concrete surface.

We have been assured that the surface will be level without any bumps, ripples, or anything to make your vehicle ill handling from start to finish. You will have 1520 ft. of concrete, that's including the 200 ft. past the finish line.

All asphalt has been recycled to the spectator side parking. We want to thank all the racers who written nice letters & want to help when needed.

Thanks again, Dennis
