Lubbock Dragway
puts an end to the long winter and the competition showed no signs of
frostbite. Belk, Polk, Wenzel, Campbell, and Shipley opened the season with
victories in the first Double Points NHRA Summit Series race.
Mike Belk’s (Plainview)
.514 light plus the 10.126 on a 10.12 dial-in sealed up the win in Super Pro
over Steve Cannon’s (Lamesa) 9.165 on 9.15 dial. Walthall (Amarillo)
and Stokes (Plainview) made it to the semis.
In Sportsman,
Jerry James’ (Plainview)
good reaction times got him to the finals where he cut a .506, but it wasn’t
enough. Lee Polk’s (Lubbock) .513 light and 133 mph Vega helped push the `64
Fairlane to a break out. Guthrie (Floydada) was the class semi.
Two tough
competitors plus two low 12 second cars equals double break out in
Modified. Kenny Wenzel's (Levelland) 12.22 Blazer beat Gregg Davis’ (Olton)
12.12 Duster. Bunch (Lubbock)
and S. Derryberry (Lubbock) were the class semis.
Trucks were the
victors in Street Class, especially Austin Campbell's (Lubbock) `03 Ram
Hemi. Campbell got the stripe over Asjes (Lubbock) `69 Chevy PU in the
semis. In the finals, the Hemi ran on the dial with a zero over
Derryberry’s (Lubbock) `02 GMC PU.
Mica Shipley
(Littlefield) took the win in Jr. Dragster over last years Class Champion
Sonjia Cortez (Plainview).
Sara Cortez (Plainview) was the class semi.
