Lubbock
Dragway
Lubbock County, TX. April 17, 2004
Saturday’s weather at the Lubbock Dragway, did not favor the racers.
Nevertheless, strong winds and cool temperatures could not intimidate the
drivers, who still managed to get great 60ft. times.
Craig Hughes (Craig Hughes Trailers) of Portales, N.M., laid down some
serious horsepower in his Dodge Dakota. The Mopar ran a 7.683 at 178 mph
during an exhibition run.
In Super Pro, Kevin Bracey (Lubbock,TX) fought through a tough field of cars
to take the win in his dragster. Bracey’s .012 light and 7.99 on a 7.97 dial
sealed the deal over Mike Womack’s (Sundown,TX) 8 second `98 Monte Carlo.
James Wathall (Amarillo,TX) in his T Roadster was the class semi.
Sportsman Class not only brought out the most cars for the Craig Hughes
Trailers Bonus Bucks, but it also gave the spectators a nail-biting
showdown. In the semis, Coy Franks’ (Flomont,TX) 9 second `82 Firebird
spotted Abraham Rubalcado’s (Crosbyton,TX) 11 second `66 Chevelle, but
Rubalcado’s better reaction caused Franks to break out by .007. The duel was
set for the finals where Billy Morris’ (Turkey,TX) wheel standing `82 Camaro
gunned down the Chevelle with the help of his side- arms, a .029 light and a
9.64 on a 9.62 dial.
Larry Hobbs (Slaton,TX), the 2003 Modified Champion, returned to winning
fashion in his `02 Envoy by edging out John Pichla’s (Brownfield,TX) `80
Camaro. Pichla’s .018 light helped him defeat his dad, Kenny Wenzel (Levelland,TX)
in the Semis.
Stacy Acevedo (Wolfforth,TX) and her `96 Mustang, stopped the trucks from
repeating in Street. Acevedo defeated Peter Asjes’ (Lubbock,TX) `69 Chevy PU
by running .02 off her dial. Danny Knox (Plainview,TX) in his `82 S-10 PU
and Josie Cavazos (Smyer,TX) in her `70 Chevy PU were the class semis.
In Motorcycle class, Gerald Brown (Lubbock,TX) ran a 10.76 on a 10.70 dial
at 131 mph on his Suzuki Hayabusa to beat Gabriel Chavez’ (Lubbock,TX) 11.01
on a 10.89 dial with his GSXR 1000.
Mica Shipley (Littlefield,TX) repeated her winning ways in the Jr’ Dragster
class. Her great reaction time helped her overcome her formidable foe,
Nicole Sexton (Lubbock,TX). Sexton’s quick 9.02 Jr. Dragster defeated Mark
Hughes (Portales, NM) in the Semis.
