Lubbock Dragway’s season opener came a month early, and the racers were treated with cool temperatures and a 25 m.p.h. tail wind.

Super Pro paired off two of the toughest competitors around in the finals. Mike Belk (Plainview, TX.) in his `84 Duster punched his ticket to victory with a perfect light over Larry Stokes’ (Plainview’ TX.) heartbreaking reaction -.004. Cory Beatty and Kevin Bracey were the class semis.

With nearly identical reaction times Ty Casey (Lubbock, TX.) in his Nova was able to hold off the assault of Coy Franks (Flomot, TX.) 9.447 (9.45) `82 Firebird to emerge with the Sportsman title. David Warshauer rounded out the top three.
Don Sexton (Lubbock, TX.) and Braden Gore (Levelland, TX.) battled it out for the Modified trophy. Sexton wheeled his `69 Camaro to a .003-initiated 11.455 (11.40) to beat Gore’s `81 Chevy P.U. Jessie Marez and John Pichla finished in the semis.
Stacy Acevedo, `04 Street Class Champ, galloped her `96 Mustang to the Tuff Shed Winner’s Corral (Circle) over Clifford Clark’s (Levelland, TX.) `95 Drag Bike, 15.433 (15.42) to 11.875 (11.78). Peter Asjes and Wally Castillo settled for third.
Like father like daughter, Nicole Sexton (Lubbock, TX.) scored the win in Jr. Dragster over the three year Class Champ Sonjia Cortez (Plainview, TX.), .065 light 8.192 (8.13) to .061 light 9.296 (9.11). Kacy Collier piloted her dragster to the semis.
In the Diesel class, Will Underwood (Houston, TX.) man handled his F-250 to victory over his friend Antonio Sanchez`s (Amarillo, TX.) `01 F-250.
