Dragway’s season opener came a month early, and the racers were treated with
cool temperatures and a 25 m.p.h. tail wind.
Super Pro paired off two of the toughest
competitors around in the finals. Mike Belk (Plainview, TX.) in his `84
Duster punched his ticket to victory with a perfect light over Larry Stokes’
(Plainview’ TX.) heartbreaking reaction -.004. Cory Beatty and Kevin Bracey
were the class semis.
With nearly identical reaction times Ty Casey
(Lubbock, TX.) in his Nova was able to hold off the assault of Coy Franks (Flomot,
TX.) 9.447 (9.45) `82 Firebird to emerge with the Sportsman title. David
Warshauer rounded out the top three.
Don Sexton (Lubbock,
TX.) and Braden Gore (Levelland,
TX.) battled it out for the Modified trophy. Sexton wheeled his `69 Camaro
to a .003-initiated 11.455 (11.40) to beat Gore’s `81 Chevy P.U. Jessie
Marez and John Pichla finished in the semis.
Stacy Acevedo, `04 Street Class Champ, galloped
her `96 Mustang to the Tuff Shed Winner’s Corral (Circle) over Clifford
Clark’s (Levelland, TX.) `95 Drag Bike, 15.433 (15.42) to 11.875 (11.78).
Peter Asjes and Wally Castillo settled for third.
Like father like daughter, Nicole Sexton
(Lubbock, TX.) scored the win in Jr. Dragster over the three year Class
Champ Sonjia Cortez (Plainview, TX.), .065 light 8.192 (8.13) to .061 light
9.296 (9.11). Kacy Collier piloted her dragster to the semis.
In the Diesel class, Will Underwood (Houston,
man handled his F-250 to victory over his friend Antonio Sanchez`s
(Amarillo, TX.) `01 F-250.
