With a whole month of canceled
racing due to rain, Lubbock Dragway was back on track for the
Labor Day weekend. On one of the rain out dates Larry Salani owner
of Fast Funnels and new track sponsor was on hand to witness the
proof that rumors are true, Lubbock Dragway has extraordinary,
competitive racing, and terrific sportsmanship. |
In
Super Pro, Donnie Jones (Lubbock, Tx.) recorded his first win of
the season and knocked off a lot of heavy hitters along the way
including Charles York (Levelland, Tx.) in the finals. Jones’
dragster posted a 9.002 (8.92) to York’s ‘82 Camaro’s time of
10.428(10.32). Mike Belk racked up some points and ended a great
night with a semi-appearance. |
Sportsman
had an impressive number of cars answer the first round call.
Jimbo Hammett (Dalhart, Tx.) powered his ’67 Camaro over Billy
“Grumpy” Dubios (Floydada, Tx.). The tree made the difference in
this final but Dubios’ ’74 Vega had a outstanding night. Semis
were Ron Gober and Billy Morris. |
Track
Reporter, Alfonso Acevedo, Jr. took the night off to show his
racing skills by pulling double duty in his ‘69 Mustang scoring
the Fast Funnel win in Modified and Street class.
In Modified, Acevedo coupled an
.034 light and 15.522(15.50) to edge out Carl Stokes’(Slaton, Tx)
Duster with his .030 light and 11.210(11.18) for a win margin of
.004. Don Sexton was the lone semi-finalist.
Finals in Street consisted of
a double breakout. Acevedo, committed the lesser foul with 15.489
(15.50) to Kevin Bracey’s (Levelland, Tx.) 16.506 (16.54). Semi
was Beau Novak. |
In
the Junior Dragster class, Nicole Sexton (Lubbock, Tx.) continued
to dominate by pulling off her forth win. Heath Kiser (Levelland,
Tx.) who also boasts a couple of victory lane appearances was
runner-up. Points leader Sara Cortez was third. |

Sabrina
Jones was unable to start her Camaro after her burnout going into
the finals. Lyndan Devin (Plainview, Tx.) showed his sportsmanship
by waiting to set off his bulbs until notified she would not be
able to stage. He was the victor in the Friday night make-up race
in the Street class. |
